So Long, Farewell

*New Blog at As A Side Note*

I’ve been struggling to decide whether or not to keep this blog open for the last few weeks.  When I first began writing the blog, it was primarily just for me and just for fun.  It helped me reflect on my practice, and I’d hoped that as my previous school moved into a 1:1 environment, I could provide something useful to say to other teachers and their students.  For a long while, this blog served as an energizing force for me and my work, and I really enjoyed the process of writing about education specifically.  And for a while, even though I wasn’t as energized as I once was, I thought once the school year got underway, I’d want to jump back in again.

Nowadays, however, this blog feels more like a another “to do,” a chore rather than a choice.  That pressure, to be clear, isn’t coming from anyone but myself.  I don’t get paid to write this blog, and no one is hammering on my door for the next post to be published by any stretch of the imagination!  But I started blogging regularly about teaching, and in my own mind, I have to “finish” what I started.  The problem is there is no clear finish line for a blog like this.  I could go on writing about the different experiences I have in the classroom, but at times, it feels like I’m just repeating myself.  Also, having a blog devoted solely to teaching has started to feel limiting in some ways as much as I enjoy my job.

I considered continuing to write here but expand the scope of this blog beyond teaching, but that didn’t seem quite right either since from the start that’s what this blog was all about.  So I’ve decided that for the foreseeable future I will not be posting to this particular space.  I’m not going to delete what’s here just yet, but I won’t be adding anything new either.  I only am writing this because this final post is serving as my “finish line” so that I can feel like I did “complete” the job after all.

Although I won’t be writing solely about teaching on this blog anymore, or at least not for a while, I am going to continue writing.  I’ll be writing about…well, I don’t quite know exactly yet, but come see.  I’ll be posting at the new blog As A Side Note.  There’s nothing there yet, but there will be very soon.  Hope to see some of you there!

  1. I will miss your blog here, but sign me up for the next one immediately. I completely understand your feelings. Notice I have not posted to my blog yet this year? With the change in my teaching duties, my issues that I felt compelled to write about and my audience seem to have changed. I may pick it back up, but right now, I’m not sure what I would say. Also, you have a whole new life at home to concentrate on and writing takes time and solitude. Go easy on yourself and when you do start back–please let me know.

  2. Dear blogging friend, I had the same dilemma, tossed several ideas around and I finally decided that it was my blog and I could blog about whatever I wanted to. I kept the address (cause I pay for it) but dressed the background in a different outfit. As you know I blog about a variety of things…and that make me happy. Learning to love just being me. I REALLY like the name of this blog and I think it applies to so many facets of our lives, not just teaching. However, I’ll follow wherever you write because it keeps me connected to my friend. I’ll look for you in the newsfeed!
